Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it’s only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they’ve spotted one such mod already.
In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there’s a user tile displayed. If you’d like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.
Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.
And when we spotted Neve Campbell out and about in Los Angeles on Thursday, we couldn’t help but notice her seemingly obvious baby bump. We were thrilled to hear her pregnancy announcement the following day! Earlier this week we saw Angelina Jolie heading for Amsterdam with daughters Zahara and Shiloh, and on Monday Jennifer Garner stepped out with daughter Violet on her first postpartum outing since the birth of baby Samuel.
Take a look through our top 20+ pictures of the week…
Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won’t affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.
As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. “To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs,” says Andy Rubin, the head of Google’s Android group. “We didn’t want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut.”
In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb — it doesn’t want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.
Offering up another look at the Ridley Scott spearheaded effort, the second trailer for “Prometheus” has just been released.
The clip hit the web after being debuted by Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron during the film’s WonderCon 2012 press conference in Anaheim, CA on Saturday (March 17).
As for the plotline, “Prometheus” finds “a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.”
Also starring Noomi Rapace, Patrick Wilson, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Logan Marshall-Green, the highly-touted motion picture is set to hit theaters on June 8, 2012.
We’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?
Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.
It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?
Yesterday we saw a quick sneak peek at new footage from Tim Burton‘s big screen adaptation of Dark Shadows and right now we get our first look at the film’s first trailer. As you may know, Dark Shadows was once a semi-cheesy daytime soap opera back in the 60s/70s … and it would appear that [...]
One of the first things I did after getting my hands on the new iPad was take a bunch of photos of it for my Apple gadget p0rn collection. Follow along to see the gallery!
The story of Hollywood?s relationship with technology reads like an on-again-off-again soap opera romance: initial feelings of fear, panic and jealousy followed by amity and intense attraction, followed, in turn, by more fear, jealousy and heated exchanges. Back in the early 1980s, MPAA President Jack Valenti went before Congress and asked them to outlaw the VCR. His graphic language infamously went so far as to compare new TV tech to the Boston Strangler.
Label boss Jimmy Iovine calls criticism ‘a drag.’ By Gil Kaufman
<P>To look at her, you'd think <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rey_lana_del/artist.jhtml"_blank">Lana Del Rey's</a> inspirations come mostly from 1940s detective movies and sepia-toned Hollywood pinups. But the "Video Games" singer told England's Magic 105.4 that one of her big fashion and music icons is Britney Spears. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724891.id:1677189" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>"I'm not really interested in a ton of female musicians but there is something about Britney that compelled me — the way she sings and just the way she looks," Del Rey said. And even though she's just released her major-label debut under the Del Rey name, she added that she's already kind of over music-making. </P><P> </P><P>"The thing that makes me happy now isn't really singing," she said. "Music was once the be-all and end-all, but when you lose everything you have over and over again, it's not so important." </P><P> </P><P>It might be a bit early for her to bail on the whole music thing though, since her album, <I>Born to Die</I>, topped the iTunes album charts in 14 countries this week, including the U.S., U.K., Italy, France, Germany, Ireland and Mexico. </P><P> </P><P>The chart triumph — and a possible #2 debut next week on the <I>Billboard</i> albums tally — came despite a rash of negative or <a href="/news/articles/1678050/lana-del-rey-album-born-to-die-reviews.jhtml">middling reviews</a>

debut last month. </P><P> </P><P>The haterade has gotten her label boss, Interscope's Jimmy Iovine, to chime in on the flack his latest protégé has been taking. It's something we've never seen before. Or maybe it's [like] the Giants and the Jets." Del Rey herself told <I>Rolling Stone</I> that she thought she looked "beautiful" and sang "fine" on the show, saying that "that's just the way I perform, and my fans know that." </P><P> </P><P>Say what you want about Del Rey's looks, attitude and performance ability, but Iovine said there is one thing you can't mess with. </P><P> </P><P>Musically, he thinks <I>Die</I> is "really good. Need something to sate that Windows 8-lust Microsoft stirred up with its Consumer Preview? Then take a gander at this in-development vehicle control app shown off at the company’s Redmond campus as part of this year’s Worldwide Public Safety Symposium. Developed by Modularis, an outfit known for their enterprise, federal and OEM automation solutions, the Metro-style application turns its host slate into a virtual controller, granting users remote access to door locks, sirens, lights, as well as the ability to pull cloud-based data — courtesy of Windows Azure — from multiple cars to determine GPS location. And, as you’ll see in the video after the break, it also has the unintended and wholly amusing benefit of freaking out innocent passers-by.
Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.
VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.
Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.
Zoho has offered an iOS app for a while now — at least for the iPhone and iPod touch. Those of you who have been wanting to use the Zoho app on your iPad were out of luck, but that’s no longer the case.
Zoho Docs 2.0 has landed in the App Store, and the most notable change is that it’s now a universal app. Now you’re able to take advantage of the app’s mobile productivity powers on your larger iOS device. Retina display support has also been added, as have document sharing options — which you can utilize in both the viewer and collaboration modes.
Just like the basic Zoho service, the app is available totally free of charge. Paid subscriptions get you additional storage space and start at $3 per month for professional use.
What if within minutes, anyone could visit a website to build a native iOS, Android and Windows Phone app, then install and run it on any phone? That’s exactly what TheAppBuilder — which launched at Mobile World Congress — promises. It features a simple HTML5-based user interface that lets you create an app by choosing and populating some widgets — like RSS feed, webpage, Twitter, Facebook, news and photo gallery (to name a few). Once finished, you’ll receive an email with links to download and install a native iOS, Android and Windows Phone version of your app for free. From there you’re able to customize and submit your app to the App Store, Play Store, and Marketplace for $29 per month. We caught up with TheAppBuilder’s Matthew David at SXSW and put the product’s claim to the test by making and deploying our very own Engadget app — all in record time. Browse the gallery below for some screen shots and hit the break to see the magic unfold in our hands-on video.
Sony has already confirmed that we won’t be seeing a next-generation PlayStation at this year’s E3 trade show, and now Microsoft has also come out and dampened any expectations about a new Xbox possibly making its debut. In a statement published by Kotaku (following a report on Twitter from Bloomberg’s Dina Bass), a Microsoft spokesperson says flatly that “while we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon.” The statement goes on to say that “2012 is all about Xbox 360,” before rattling off a list of milestones and some of the big titles planned for release this year. That leaves Nintendo with the stage to itself hardware-wise, which will presumably be showing off more of its next-generation console, the Wii U.
Yes! The hackers from the Chronic Dev Team—with a special intervention by German developer Stefan Esser—have liberated the shiny new iPad from the tyranny of the app store already using a modification of the Absinthe jailbreaking tool. More »
The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.
Presumably it’s not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that’s causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab’s JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.
Alexander Clauss, iCab’s developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. “Maybe if I would have called the modules ‘smart bookmarks’ and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code.”
In conclusion, to circumvent Apple’s draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however — but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

To celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.
Ironically, the app won’t actually feature anything to do with William and Kate’s marriage — rather, it will focus on the “tradition, splendor and romance” that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. “[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29.”
Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of ‘Royal App,’ won’t be available until April 18 — just 11 days before Kate’s big day. It won’t be free, either: it’ll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, orthree of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!
Stewart bids a topless farewell to her days as Bella Swan in the celebrity-studded clip. By Kevin P. Sullivan
Kristen Stewart in the “On the Road” trailer Photo: MK2 Productions
The trailer for “On the Road,” an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal beat generation novel, finally hit the Web and brought the cool of 1960s America with it. We saw Kristen Stewart shake it and roll one up. Garrett Hedlund talks about the dumb stuff that he does and can’t explain, and Sam Riley sounds disturbingly like Heath Ledger’s Joker.
Here are our five key scenes from the “One the Road” trailer.
KStew Rolls Deep This is not the Bella Swan you know. This is Marylou, the 16-year-old, reefer-smoking chick that Dean Moriarty (Hedlund) just married. We’re not sure if there could have been a more striking image to let us know that Kristen Stewart has left Forks, Washington, far behind her.
A Breezy Drive Let’s take that last part back for one second. If we needed a clearer image that Stewart is removing the mantle of Bella Swan for her future career, we have what looks like a shot of the actress removing something else in the front seat with Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley: her top. We’ve seen Stewart with an edge in several of her other films, but for “On the Road,” she seems to be bidding “Twilight” adieu in style.
The Freakout As a key work of the beat generation, what would a film adaptation of “On the Road” be without a good old-fashioned drug freak-out dance? Here we see Hedlund tripping out and getting his freak on. It’s rare that we see such a loose Hedlund, and the scene gives a good idea of the kind of shenanigans Dean will be up to.
Cutting A Rug We saw a snap shot of the so-called “Dirty Dancing” scene in an early still from the film, but actually watching a clip of it in the trailer proved that things are certainly going to get hot.
Every Actor Ever In case you were wondering, that’s Amy Adams laughing on the floor with Elisabeth Moss (who plays Peggy Olson on “Mad Men”). That’s also Terrence Howard slaying the sax. And oh, look! It’s Viggo Mortensen firing a gun and Kirsten Dunst packing her bags. Watching “On the Road” may turn into a game of “Find the Celebrity Cameo.”

A new project from DARPA could successfully bring satellites to the same throwaway status as paper cups and Charlie Sheen’s income (#winning). At $500,000 a pop, the orbitals would hardly be chump change, but the Pentagon insists these airborne systems could provide reconnaissance within 90 minutes of deployment and would deliver valuable tactical information to areas not covered by current satellites. Known as SeeMe, the systems would be launched in groups of 24 — which equates to a $12 million cluster — and would remain in orbit for 60 to 90 days, at which point they’d burn up upon atmospheric re-entry. Currently, DARPA is seeking contractors that can manufacture the systems rapidly at low costs, which can also “develop advanced technologies for optics, power, propulsion and communications to keep size and weight down.” It’s said to further discuss the project at a March 27th event known as Proposers’ Day. In the meantime, we’re going to hit the junkyard and see what we can cobble together.
After releasing a teaser earlier today, Archos is now shedding a tiny bit of light on its upcoming G10 xs series. As slides from its recent Paris presser show, the upcoming tabs, of which little is known, will reportedly measure in at only 7.6mm thick, besting the silhouette of Apple’s newest iPad; a figure that bumps up to only 11mm when paired with its companion keyboard dock. The convertible slates are set for a retail debut sometime this year and, despite not sharing the hinged design of ASUS’ Transformer Prime, look to be aimed squarely at that same market space. No information was given as to the lineup’s OS of choice (presumably, Android ICS) or specs, but we do know the devices will retail between 200 to 400 Euros, depending on the configuration. Hop on past the break for a brief video glimpse of this next generation in French-made tablet tech.
Kermit the Frog and Walter also begin write-in campaign for ‘Muppet Show’ faves Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Vote now! By James Montgomery, with reporting by Josh Wigler
Walter and Kermit Photo: MTV News
The Muppets might not strike you as a particularly hoops-savvy bunch, until you realize they’ve hung out with everyone from Dr. J to Rebecca Lobo and just did a movie with Jason Segel, who is, like, 7 feet tall and can definitely dunk.
So obviously, when Kermit the Frog and his pal Walter stopped by the MTV Newsroom earlier this week, we had to get their take on our ongoing Musical March Madness tournament, which pits the 64 biggest bands against one another in a bracket battle for ultimate superiority … just like the actual NCAA basketball tournament, only with more Coheed and Cambria.
Voting in all first-round MMM matchups runs until Sunday at midnight ET, so there’s still time to help guide your favorites to victory. But for all you last-minute voters out there, here are Kermit’s and Walter’s picks to take it all in this year’s tournament.
“I would have to obviously say Green Day — they’re one of my favorite bands,” Kermit said. “My Morning Jacket I love, because they did an album we did called the Green album, and also, I have to say, there’s nothing like a good round of Nickelback to bring out the fierceness in the frog. But really, my favorite is the Foo Fighters, because I love to say ‘Foo.’ ”
He really does. Also, who knew Kermit was a Nickelback fan? And while most of Kermit’s picks seem like locks to advance in the tournament (except for the top-seeded Foos, who are getting all they can handle from #16, James Durbin), Walter is taking some risks, picking upset-focused up-and-comers and veteran squads to advance.
“I have to go with Florence and the Machine, because they were on ‘Saturday Night Live’ when we hosted with Jason … she’s got a killer voice,” he said. “I also like that song ‘What the Water Gave Me,’ but I hope she’s not talking about, like, giardia or something like that, that terrible bacteria parasite … that’s what the water gave me once.
“I love the classics, I’m afraid. I like Van Halen, I gotta pick Van Halen,” he continued. “Oh, and of course, Mumford and Sons. Did you know their frontman was formerly the Amazing Mumford on ‘Sesame Street’? True story.”
We did not know that. Of course, Walter wasn’t content to just pick underdogs. He decided to launch an impromptu write-in campaign to get another “Muppet” fave in the race for Musical March Madness.
“Can I do a write-in?” he asked. “I was a little disappointed in MTV [for not including] Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. That is my #1 choice. That’s who I’d pick to win it.”
MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament is under way! Voting in the first round runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 18, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war.
